FROM A HOME-BUILT LATHE TO STAGES IN 29 COUNTRIES.
In 1969, a 15-year-old apprentice cabinetmaker started turning drumsticks on a lathe he built on his veranda from wooden parts and a washing-machine motor, making sticks for himself and the other kids taught by his drum teacher, a percussionist in a Prague symphony orchestra. After the Velvet Revolution he founded Pellwood in 1990 with 15 hornbeam models. Today his son Vojtěch runs the workshop in Čestice: 60 models of sticks and brushes, exported to 29 countries, and still tested by playing them ourselves.
